Intro by: Michele Shelburne,
President, LADATCO Patagonia. The word itself evokes visions of far distant, ruggedly remote and inhospitable lands. Partially true, ultimately incorrect. And many more misconceptions abound. The first misconception is that Patagonia belongs to Chile or that it belongs to Argentina. It belongs to both. It is that area below a line from Puerto Montt, Chile across Argentina to the Atlantic coast and south to where land disappears and the oceans converge. It is a region, an area and not a country or a state. The second, third and fourth is that it's remoteness and ruggedness makes it inaccessible. That may have been the case years ago but not any more. You can fly 727/737/MD11 jets into 8 major airports and drive over paved and all weather gravel roads to the main points of interest. Hotels from 3-star to 5-star luxury provide all the amenities needed for comfort and and all the luxuries needed for self-indulgence. Communications and transportation have eliminated any risk factor. In fact, the relative remoteness makes it an all more intriguing area, and especially appealing to those of us that like to go to the still undiscovered. Patagonia is one of the great "destinations" in South America. It is an incredibly varied destination. Experience it now. It's still rugged and remote enough to be relished. Yet accessible and comfortable enough to be enjoyed.
