There are many hotels in Rio, most situated along the beach front areas extending from Copacabana south to Barra de Tijuca.  And as in many cities in the world, there is a great variety - even within the same "star-rating".

In general, "five-star" properties have to have a beach location, multiple restaurants-bars and a swimming pool.  Four star properties have lesser amounts-varieties of facilities while three-star have just the basics.

Since most visitors go once in a lifetime to Rio, splurging on accommodations with a view is recommended. This is particularly true if you are staying on Copacabana Beach a stunningly beautiful long arc-shaped beach. So no matter which hotel, splurge and pay for guaranteed oceanfront accommodations.
