Meeting of the Waters
Manaus

Must Do's

Must Do's Include:

The famous opera house, the Amazon Theatre, was inaugurated in 1896. Built during the rubber boom, many of Europe=s greatest troupes and opera companies performed here. Built in neo-classical style and designed in Portugal, the theatre was raised with stone blocks from England, French roofing tile and Italian marble. The floor is composed of thousands of pieces of wood fitted togther without nails or glue. The auditorium is decorated with paintings by the Italian Domenico de Angelis. The external dome is composed of 36 thousand scales of enameled ceramic in the colors of the national flag.

Take time to visit the Indian Musem run by Salesian missionaries. There you will see a collection of handicrafts, ceramics, clothing, utensils and ritual objects from the various Indian tribes of the upper Rio Negro.

The Meeting of the Waters is not to be missed. A boat trip will take you about 15 kilometers from Manaus, where the confluence of the yellow-brown Solimoes (Amazon) and the blue-black Rio Negro run side by side for about 12 miles without their waters mixing.

While Manaus is interesting and historically important, it is primarily the gateway to a variety of experiences in the Amazon jungle.   While you can do some lodges with only 2-days and 1-night, this is not recommended as it generally does not give you time to  experience the immense variety of flora and fauna. Plan on, at minimum,  3-days/2-nights and if you have time, use 4-days/3-ngihts. This truly gives you time to acclimate and adjust to being in the jungle.

Here are some lodges and Amazon experiences LADATCO recommends from Manaus:

In addition to lodges, Manaus is the gateway for two scheduled cruises along the Rio Negro and Rio Solimoes:

  • The 32-passenger traditional Amazon Clipper Premium has 2, 3 and 5 night cruises
  • The 16-passenger and more upscale M/Y Tucano has more in-depth 8-night cruises.

If you want to charter your own boat for a tailor-made cruise at your own pace, the M/Y Santana is available in addition to the Clipper and Tucano.
