More than a place, Casa Andina Private Collection Suasi Island is an experience. The vastness of the Lake Titicaca can be observed from every single room of the hotel, which lies on a mild and sheltered hill next to magnificent Andean terraces full of flowers.

Built with local materials such as stone, adobe and totora reed, the hotel is located in the small private island of Suasi, one of the most beautiful and special ones within the whole Lake Titicaca. The island has 106 acres and is home to the four South American camelids.

Getting there:
There are many options for getting Suasi Island; travelers can get there by land or by lake. For arriving Suasi, Casa Andina recommends to take the route by lake (through Uros and Taquile Islands); for coming back to Puno or Juliaca, Casa Andina recommends the route by land that goes round the lake through a small road with amazing views.

SUASI: the unforgettable island experience

Lake Titicaca is located at 3810 meters above sea level and covers 8400 km2. Close to the island of Suasi, the deepest part of the lake reaches a depth of 280 meters. The great volume of water has a thermoregulatory function giving birth to life, domestication of species and culture. The Tihuanaco culture was developed more than 1500 years ago, leaving numerous archaeological remains like complex hydraulic and agriculture systems. Later, the Uros, Aymaras and Quechuas inhabited the lake, until the arrival the Spanish who found Puno in 1688. The Lake Titicaca National Reserve is located in the department of Puno, with a surface area of 37 hectares that host more than 60 species of seabirds, 4 local fish and 18 amphibians, as well as local plants, camelids and other mammals.

Recommendations: sunglasses, solar block cream moisturizing cream, bathing suit, hat, warm and comfortable clothes, camera. It is advisable little physical activity and a light meal during the first day at altitude.

1- Meals on the Island (BBQ)
Our travelers will enjoy a nice Andean meal on the riverbank, based on products of our garden and meats from the communities. Entrées: soup of wheat or quinoa. Salad bar: lettuce, carrots, tomato, and beats. Baked bread and butter. Sauces (vinaigrette, huancaína, rocoto-hot chili). Main courses: grilled meat / beef tenderloin / alpaca tenderloin / pork tederloin / chicken breast / chorizos / potatoes / goose. Desserts: Caramel custard / Fruit salad. Drinks: Tea, coffee, milk, infusions

2.-Discover plants and animals *
Suasi Island covers and area of 43 hectares containing species of flora and fauna, for example three species that belong to the camelids and one specie to the vizcacha. Hiking along smooth trails within the island.

3- Andean Spa with a Sauna and Massage Service
The traveler enjoys a relaxing and healthy experience using products, creams and oils obtained from local plants carried out in rooms with music, candles and incense while being rewarded with a spectacular view of Lake Titicaca

4- Sailing Lake Titicaca*
We take a rowing wood boat and sail on the lake accompanied by a Cambria Aymara inhabitant. During the trip we will see camelids, vizcachas and seabirds colonies.

5- Lake Titicaca at night*
The traveler can observe the South firmament with a 5’ Bushnell modern computerized telescope and the cosmology that Andean communities have developed during years. The experience ends with a moonlight bonfire.

6- Martha’s Cultural Cabin *
Martha Giraldo, the owner of the island, runs a cultural cabin where our travelers can meet the Altiplano and Lake Titicaca ecosystem singularity, standing out human participation along the history of livestock breeding, agriculture, ceramics and textillery. The cabin counts with one of the most complete libraries with books about the Altiplano.

7- Hiking Mount Mulluni
We leave the island aboard a boat towards the community of Cambría where, after a short hike out, we start the uphill to the Mulluni’s summit. We stop at the top to contemplate beautiful lake views, islands, and communities along the riverbank. After a smooth descent, we stop at Luis’ house, where we taste some local products, visit gardens and find out about the way of raising their children.

8- Canoeing along the Lake Titicaca*
We navigate around the island aboard Canadian canoes passing by a group of totora reeds and watching seabirds like grebes, Andean geese, black skimmers, Peruvian boobies and different species of seagulls, as well as camelids and vizcachas.
