EXPLORATIONS
A TRUE DISCOVERY

While staying with us at the Finch Bay in Puerto Ayora… You could read a book by the freshwater swimming pool, or contemplate life among the mangroves… You could feel the rush of adrenalin riding the surf, or the rush of the wind riding a bike downhill towards the shore… You could be amazed with child-like awe at the array of iconic creatures and other-worldly landscapes… You could open up new realms of discovery just by putting your head underwater while snorkelling from our beach or from our private yacht.

You could do all these things and many more.

BIKING

What better place to enjoy your pastime of biking than on Santa Cruz Island: Beautiful views, little traffic and unique animals on either side of the path. Easy downhill paths lead to walks to the beach accompanied by birdwatching opportunities. A great family activity!

BOND THROUGH FAMILY TRAVEL

The Galapagos Islands and the Finch Bay present an enviable stage for a family to travel, have fun, and learn together. There’s something for everyone, no matter the age, and amazing experiences to be shared together: from swimming with sea lions to understanding geology, from an afternoon by the pool to encounters with giant tortoises…

ENJOY GARRAPATERO BEACH

Garrapatero Cove and beach, located on the eastern side of Santa Cruz Island, are considered to have the finest sand in all Galapagos! Enjoy a soothing dip in the waters; take a small trip on a tandem, sit-on-top kayak; lie on the beach; or walk a short distance to a brackish lagoon, home of stilts, plovers, pintails and flamingos.

EXPLORE LAS GRIETAS

Las Grietas are a fascinating rock formation of two cliffs separated by an ocean water chasm. They are reached along a walkway and path from the hotel through a mangrove and opuntia cactus-filled landscape, passing by old salt mines. The Grietas are a lovely place for a snorkel, since the water here is stunningly clear and calm.

HIKE

Explore the otherworldly landscapes formed by volcanic activity, some as recent as 100 years’ ago. Hikes in Galapagos vary from island to island and give visitors the chance to learn first-hand about geology and, of course, to get selfie distance away from fearless iconic island wildlife.

KAYAK

Paddling around the waters of the Marine Reserve is a great way both to get some exercise and spot unique endemic wildlife. Birds rest on the cliffs that form the edges of the islands. Sea lions and their pups lie meters away on the beaches.

MEET GIANT TORTOISES

Up in the highlands of Santa Cruz, we visit a giant tortoise reserve. In the wild, tortoises can be seen grazing on the surrounding vegetation, or wallowing in muddy banks or in a small red-coloured pond (impressively colored by surface red pond-weeds).

OBSERVE WILDLIFE

Wildlife observation is the prime reason why so many people choose to visit the archipelago. Nowhere else in the world can we observe animals so closely, so calmly. And from your base at the hotel, you can encounter many of the Galapagos’ BIG15

RELAX

Take it easy, rest on a pool lounger or a hammock, dig your bare toes into the sand just steps away from your room. Sip a cocktail at the bar, savour fine dining at our renowned restaurant, end the day with a massage and then watch as the stars illuminate the night sky with its Equatorial constellations.

SCUBA DIVING

Here, in the myriad shades of blue of the Pacific Ocean, live sharks, snake eels, sea turtles, mantas, amberjacks, and barracudas as well as tropical fish, multi-colored sponges, moray eel, octopus, and more – sharply focused in the crystalline waters. Divers often report playing with curious sea lion pups, watching a marine iguana on a mission, and the heart-stopping thrill of being surrounded by hammerheads. This is a universe all of its own, unsurpassable to divers in variety and abundance of marine wildlife.

SNORKEL

Beginners and experienced snorkelers alike will quickly fall in love with snorkelling in Galapagos. The Marine Reserve showcases numerous unusual coloured fish species, enormous sea turtles, and harmless sharks. And sharing the water with playful sea lions is, of course, an unforgettable experience.

SPLASH IN TORTUGA BAY

This stunning white sand beach, located a healthy walk from our hotel, is considered by many to be the most beautiful in the Galapagos archipelago. It’s the perfect location for swimming, relaxing, kayaking, snorkeling and even surfing!

STROLL THE STREETS

Explore the town of Puerto Ayora. With its small cafes, boutiques and nightclubs, there is a little something to entertain everyone. Check out everyday life for locals at the farmer’s market on Saturdays or visit the fisherman’s wharf any day of the week.

VISIT CHARLES DARWIN STATION

To deepen and broaden your knowledge, make your way to the headquarters of the Galapagos National Park Service and the recently renovated Charles Darwin Research Station, located in Puerto Ayora. You’ll find a fascinating interpretation centre and can wander through the tortoise rearing program facilities.

WALK THROUGH LAVA TUNNELS

Visit one of the island’s lava tunnels, significant geological formations that take us back in time and act as a stark reminder of the islands’ volcanic origins!
