About Rainforests Rainforest Basics Rainforest Experiences

GETTING THERE:

Getting there is indeed part of the overall experience! From the "terminal nacional" board the 38-seat Avro twin prop plane for 40-minute flight from Quito to Coca. Meeting by La Selva staff and transfer to the port to board your motorlaunch for two hour ride down the Napo River to the La Selva boat dock. Debark and walk 20 minutes through the rainforest to a small stream where small canoes take you to Garzacocha (Heron) Lake and the La Selva Lodge.

Take note you are allowed only 20 lbs of luggage on the flight so you'll want to be properly prepared. Check out our Rainforest Basics.

ABOUT THE LODGE:

La Selva consists of 16-double cabins each built in the native design with thatched roofs and plenty of windows for the rainforest breezes. Each cabana has a private bathroom equipped with toilet and shower.

There is a bar and restaurant in another typical building along the shores of the lake, offering excellent vistas of the lake.

La Selva is well known for its "gourmet jungle" fare blending the finest Ecuadorian ingredients with French, North American and Ecuadorian cooking skills.

Laundry service is available and the dining-bar area has 110 V electricity for recharging batteries.

In the area of La Selva there are 500 - 600 species of birds, 6 types of monkeys, tapir, deer, caiman, butterfly and a wide variety of tropical flora.

WHAT TO DO THERE

There are a variety of activities, tailored to the abilities and desires of the participants, and labeled from easy to moderate to challenging.

These activities include:

  • Walk to Silverio's House: Cross the lake by canoe for 2 1/2 to 3 hour walk on a purposely undeveloped trail with some physical challenge. Half the walk is in primary forest and the other half passes the huts of indigenous neighbors along the Napo

  • Mandicocha Trail: An easy trail close to the lodge which is filled with wildlife no matter what hour of the day. This walk can last as long as you want.

  • Mandicocha-Mandiyacu: A 3 to 4 hour trip following the trail to Mandicocha Lake with a completely different eco-system than Garzacocha Lake. Board paddle canoes for 1 1/2 hour glide down the stream with a myriad of wildlife.

  • El Salado: It's a 2 hour excursion combined with a picnic lunch and trips across the Napo to visit a site with a little luck parrots, parakeets and macaws can be seen in great quantities.

  • High Forest Trail: This 3 to 4 hour excursion crosses the Napo River and uses a rather challenging mountainous trail to explore yet another eco-system with a chance to see birds and other wildlife. Also a chance to eat lemon ants.

  • Pedro's Trail: Two versions available: cross Garzacocha Lake for walk through the virgin forest to the observation tower (4 hours) or pass by the butterfly farm and join the trail in the middle.

  • Little Chawamango: Short trip by foot around the edge of Garzacocha Lake with return to the lodge by canoe.
  • Challuacocha Lake: A motorized canoe trip down the Napo River followed by a walk and paddle canoe trip to Challuacocha for a picnic at a shelter overlooking the lake with time to relax, canoe, fish before return two hour walk through yet another unique forest.
  • Pilche Trail: Gross Garzacocha Lake for a walk along the trail to see whatever wildlife happens along, and a huge colony of leafcutter ants.
  • Observation Tower: Not far from the lodge is the 135 tall observation tower which you can visit as often as you wish for a true bird's-eye view of the forest canopy.
  • Butterfly Farm: Just 5 minutes from the lodge, the farm breeds 30,000-35,000 butterflies each year from egg to caterpillar to pupa (or chrysalis and cocoons as they are commonly known) and sells them all over the world. The farm is staffed by 15.
  • Chawamango's Trail: Take the Mandicocha trail and walk parallel to the lake to arrive at the Napo River and then return by elevated walkway and paddle across the lake, for a total of about 3 hours.

HOW TO INCLUDE LA SELVA IN YOUR ECUADORIAN VISIT:

La Selva offers two packages:

Packages include transportation from Quito, accommodations, all meals, services of English speaking naturalist guides and daily excursions.

FOR THE TARZAN AND JANE IN YOU:

La Selva offers a unique jungle program: the "Light Brigade" . This special camping adventure uses the lodge as its base of operations and is restricted to a maximum of 8 persons.

This program is for (in the words of the creator of La Selva, Eric Schwartz:): people with a passion, for people who want to explore their personal frontiers as well as those of the rain forest. It should be for everyone, but it probably is not - in any case our slogan for the Light Brigade is "The only equipment you need is passion."

There is walking, hiking, trekking, canoeing, camping in tents and yet, the gourmet food and service as normally given at the lodge itself.

All campsites have rustic kitchen/dining area in the traditional style of the jungle, but provisions come form the lodge itself. The toilet facilities are latrines.

Each tent is placed on a bamboo platform with a thatched roof and has a camping mattress (one inch thick with a built in pillow) with clean sheets. Clean towels are provided daily. Kerosene lamps light the campsite.

A logistical team of 15 makes all of this possible - taking a different route, they arrive before you do to set up camp. They carry your belongings and all the provisions so you are unburdened to discover the jungle in all its glory.

The Light Brigade Itinerary - 7-days/6-nights departing Tuesdays from Quito:

TUE - QUITO-COCA-LA SELVA
Morning flight to Coca then 2 hours by motorlaunch to the dock and then walk and canoe to La Selva Lodge arriving in time for late lunch. After lunch, change into your field clothes, store your non-essentials and city gear, and then walk to your first campsite. En route be sure to climb the Observation Tower for a bird's-eye vista of the forest canopy.

WED - LAKE CHALLUACOCHA:
Today is called the "Death March". You will spend 8 leisurely hours strolling through the jungle paradise with picnic lunch en route and still arrive at the next camp in time for a swim before cocktails. You will spend two nights here at one of the most beautiful lakes in the Amazon basin.

THU - LAKE CHALLUACOCHA
No rush today. You will enjoy an early morning bird watching session near the lake and take a foray or two into the jungle. After lunch you will learn to paddle a canoe in preparation for tomorrow, and you'll have time to relax and swim.

FRI - DENSE JUNGLE
After breakfast, hike to the Panayacu (Piranha) River where your paddling lessons will come in handy as you spend several hours canoeing through the dense jungle, ducking fallen trees and marveling at the intensity of life in the rainforest. Then from another trailhead you will hike to an indigenous community of Quichua Indians. Because La Selva respects privacy and the Light Brigade group is small, you will be able to find someone to talk to you about their way of life. Then continue on to the camp for another night in the rainforest.

SAT - LA SELVA AREA
A motorized canoe picks you up at the banks of the Napo and takes you 45 minutes up-river to the trail that goes to Anaconda Lake for 2-hour walk along the edge of the lake. After a picnic lunch, time to relax, explore and maybe even take a siesta before return hike back to the river and final motorized canoe trip to your last campsite - but there is a minor mountain to climb before you finally reach your camp. While it is steeply inclined it is only a 1/4 mile long and by now should be an easy feat.

SUN - LA SELVA AREA
Today a number of trips are possible - parrot salt licks, "high forest" walk - and the decision of what to do will be made democratically. After lunch continue on to your last campsite, close to the Napo River.

MON - LA SELVA-COCA-QUITO
At the appropriate time, motorized canoe to Coca and return flight back to Quito.
