Utila The Bay Islands Honduras |
|
Utila is the cheapest and least developed of the islands. A lush canopy of pine, mango, almond and palm trees cover most of the island, providing a haven for tropical birds, rare lizards and large prehistoric iguanas. There are no big resorts on the island and only a very small, lodge-type places. All other accommodations are basic. While sunbathing and swimming are not particularly good, places like Jack Neal Beach and Chepees White Hole do have beaches for both. There are several scenic walks and bicycle rides. If you are up for a little exercise the most scenic all-day trek begins just off the main drag in the center of town. You pass the quaint historical cemetary on your way to Pumpkin Hill where a trail climbs to the top of the hill for wonderous views. The Central America Footprint Handbook writes: "There are currently around 50 dive sites around Utila, where permanent moorings have been establish to minimize damage to the coral reef. Although the reef is colorful and varied, there are not a lot of fish, and lobster have almost disappeared. The dive sites are close to shore at about 20m depth but they are all boat dives. Diving off the north coast is more spectacular, with drop-offs, canyons and caves. Fish are more numerous, helped by the establishment of the Turtle Harbour Marine Reserve and Wildlife Refuge. "Ultila is essentially a very popular dive training center. You can learn to dive here cheaper than anywhere else in the Caribbean, especially if you include the low living expenses." |
