Isla Guanaja
The Bay Islands, Honduras

The Central America Footprint Handbook writes:

"Columbus called Guanaja the Island of Pines, but Hurricane Mitch swept most of them away. Since then, a great replanting effect has started and, until the new pines have grown, there are many flowering and fruiting plants thriving on the island. The island was declared a forest reserve in 1961, and is now designated a national marine park.

Much of Guanaja town, locally known as Bonacca and covering a small caye off the coast, is built on stilts above sea water, with boardwalks and concrete pathways, hence its nick-name: the "Venice of Honduras".

"The most famous dive site off Guanaja is the wreck of the Jado Trader, sunk in 1987 in about 30 meters on a flat bottom surrounded by some large coral pinnacles which rise to about 15 meters. Big black groupers and moray eels live here, as does a large shy jewfish and many other fish and crustaceans."
