GUATEMALA: Guatemala City |
![]() |
Founded in 1776 after war and earthquakes had forced abandonment, in succession, of the three colonial capitals, Guatemala City today is a modern, bustling capital. There are numerous good hotels and a large selection of eating establishments, both typical and international. A city tour is a must, to introduce and orient you to the city. There are many museums and a modern Teatro Nacional. One of the major ancient cities of Mesoamerica, Kaminaljuyu, flourished inside what is now the city, and excavations of this ancient site can be visited. The Mercado Central offers hundreds of stalls of local textiles and handicrafts at good bargain prices so shopping can begin right here in the city. And there is a government sponsored handicraft center displaying the variety of handicrafts available throughout the country. For short stays, numerous full day excursions are available to the countrys main sites.
