ABOUT THE CASONA DE SAN MIGUEL - in their own words:

Opening in 2011, La Casona de San Miguel, a fabulous mansion in the geographical and spiritual heart of downtown Quito,  is being re-done as a 31-room boutique-hotel.  The house has been classified as a Historic Heritage of the city and is located at a privileged corner of Plaza San Francisco.

On the land, originally granted to one of the Spanish conquistadors after the founding of the city in 1534, a large house, known as Casona de San Miguel was built, and inhabited for over 200 years, until 1840. Due to the importance of the Plaza San Francisco in the following centuries, various wealthy families built their homes around it, and a beautiful mansion was built in 1915 to replace the original Casona de San Miguel; it later became the residence of several Republican-era presidents, but disaster struck and the house suffered a calamitous fire. It was completely rebuilt in 1926 by its last owners, the Gangotenas, one of the capital's leading families.   The current house was built on the same corner in 1926, by an architect of Italian origin, a Renaissance-inspired building that combines Neo-Classical elements over its three floors.

Its sophisticated interior includes painted tin ceilings, and woodwork lovingly and painstakingly restored.  The present classic design with touches of contemporary chic, takes full advantage of the mansion's elegant, tall windows, drawing the bright, Andean light into every suite, while providing exceptional views of the Square, the Panecillo hillside and the interior patio. Even these windows have respected the style of the era, while today being double-glazed for sound proofing.

Casona de San Miguel, Boutique Hotel, is designed around its central patio: the wood-paneled library, the solarium, the glass-roofed central patio, the bar, the ground-floor 24/7 café and restaurant perfectly located for watching everyday life in the Plaza, the garden with its displays of flowers, orchids and ornamental plants... Perhaps best of all, the roof-top terrace provides wrap-around views of Quito's Old Town.
