LOCATION
Puerto Viejo is the translation to what the historic locals really called this area: "Old Harbor". In order to build the railroad to San José and work in the banana plantations during the 1870's black laborers were brought from Caribbean islands such as Jamaica, these workers and their descendants established fishing and farming communities along the coast and continue to live there. There's a great calmness in the small town of Puerto Viejo and the rest of the coast. It's nearby surroundings such as Cahuita National Park, Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, beautiful beaches and impressive hiking spots, make Puerto Viejo the epicenter of the community and tourists.
THE SPOT
Dreadlocked Rastafarians, reggae music, Creole cooking, and the English-based patois of this Afro-Caribbean culture give this region a quasi-Jamaican flavor. In this side of the country food is spicier, and the rhythmic lilt of patois and reggae music is felt all over, experience the environments calm attitude and let your self go.The powerful scenery, peace, and the tropical forest make this area unique. Its jungles host extensive wildlife, with congos, white face monkeys, exotic birds, and beautiful flowers. The silence is ideal for your rest and so are the ocean kissing palm trees where you may rest under the sun or shade. And if you're in the mood for some adventure, you may choose from a selection of activities such as canopy tours, horse back riding, hiking, scuba, snorkeling, and more.
SURROUNDINGS:
Cahuita National Park
Created in 1970 Cahuita National Park was created for the protection of its coastal flora and fauna, coral reefs and the marine eco-systems. Cahuita's main attractions are its white sandy beaches, miles of coconut groves, tranquil clear seas and coral reefs, which are perfect for the amateur snorkeler.Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge
Located about 12 kilometers (18 miles) southeast of Puerto Viejo, and just south of the small village of Manzanillo is one of the most beautiful scenic sites in the country. The refuge protects many species of animals that are either endangered such as the crocodile and the tapir, or whose population has been reduced dramatically like the cayman, pacas, keel-billed toucans, and ornate hawk-eagles. There are few spots in the world where you can enjoy the flora and fauna this refuge offers, take some hiking shoes and adventure yourself into the forest. Bring a camera with you and prepare yourself for unforgettable moments. Fine sandy beaches, gentle waves, coral reefs are ideal for nature lovers and underwater enthusiasts; these are only some of the ingredients that make this region splendid.Kekoldi Indegenous Reserve
This reserve is located over Puerto Viejos hills behind the town of Puerto Viejo.
