Arenal By Night

Arenal Volcano and area
Costa Rica

From "The New Key to Costa Rica":

Volcan Arenal is the quintessential volcano. Its perfectly conical shape emerges from Alajuela;s gentle green hills. From time to time, loud explosions are heard, a mushroom cloud of grey, brown, orange or blue smoke billows out of the top and you can see the sokey trails of ejected boulders as they bounce down the slopes.

Since Arenal was dormant until the late 1960's, the only people sho sus[pected that it was a volcano were those who had scaled it and found a crater and steam vents at the top. But few listened to them, until an earthquake shook the area on July 29, 1968. Twelve hours later, Arenal blew, sending out shock waves that were recorded as far away as Boulder, Colorado. All damage occurred roughly five kilometers weest of the volcano. Lava flows eradicated the town of Pueblo Nuevo, and by the end, 78 people had died. Three new craters were formed during the eruption. Since then Arenal hasn't erupted; it just rumbles and explodes, shooting out rocks, soot and smoke.

Arenal is most impressive at night - in the dark, bursts of fire and red-hot ricks shoot hundreds of feet into the sky. Incandescent material cascades down the sides, especially the north side. In the day you see only smoke and hear the volcano's terrible roar. There are explosions every few hours during Arenal's active phases but it can go mojnths without activity.

The 1633 meter high Arenal Volcano is some 6 kilometers from the town of La Fortuna, whose main square offers striking views of the volcano.  La Fortuna has the distinction of being the closest town to the volcano and there are a growing number of restaurants and shops in town.

The La Fortuna Waterfalls is 5.5 km miles south. A trail leads from the parking lot to the base of the falls. Horseback riding treks are another way to visit these falls.

Lake Arenal is an artifical 32-sq-mile lake created by damming a river. Satellite photos have identified several ancient Indian settlements at the bottom of the lake; archaeological studies suggeset they may be as much as 2,000 years old. Afternoon winds on the lake make it a popular windsurfing spot. THe lake is also excellent for fishing. The Central America indigenous rainbow bass "guapote" is the most fierce fighter among the freshwater fish.

The Venado caves, with 12 chambers, are for the adventurous as wading a river and crawling on your hands ond knees are often required to get between them. Bats number in the thousands and you may see frogs and insects in addition to the cream colored stalactites and stalagmites.

At the base of the volcano, on the northwest face, is Tabacon hot springs (13 km southwest of Fortuna; 21 km east of Arenal) where steaming waters of the Rio Tabacon tumble from the lava fields. Tabacon Resort features five natural mineral pools (80-102 degrees Farenheit) and natural hot springs set in exotic landscaped gardens.
