Arenal Tour Descriptions

CANO NEGRO WILDLIFE REFUGE
Perhaps the most important nesting site for migrant waterfowl, Caño Negro offers an unmatched quantity of birds and a great breadth of species. In addition to the birds, you can find monkeys, iguanas, slots, turtles and caimans.

So if you’re a nature lover, get ready. We’ll pick you up from your hotel and head to Los Chiles, a culturally mixed village only four kilometers from the Nicaraguan border. Here you’ll get on a boat for a river adventure. The four-hour floating safari through tropical rainforests and pastureland will make for an interesting contrast once we reach the huge Caño Negro marsh. Our experienced bilingual guide will bring the area alive for you, and you might see literally hundreds of birds while you’re out there. Some species include the Anhinga or Snake Bird (anhinga anhinga), Roseate Spoonbill (ajaia ajaja), it is possible to see little groups of this bird feeding in the river’s surroundings. Also plentiful are Wood Storks (mycteria americana), and the Jabiru (jabiru mycteria), which is the largest bird in Central America and in danger of extinction. Also the Olivaceous Cormorant (palacrocorax olivaceus), that makes its nest in the area; it is also the most popular bird in the refuge. Caño Negro has the largest colony of cormorants in Costa Rica. Along the river we can see howler monkeys (alouata palliata), spider monkeys (ateles geoffrogi), white-faced monkeys (cebus capuccinus), also the three-toed sloth (bradipus variegatus) and some reptiles such as caimans (caiman crocodilos), the Jesus Christ lizard (basiliscus basiliscus) and turtles.

ARENAL VOLCANO HIKE TOUR
Enjoy the fiery glory of Arenal Volcano.

Before the hill suddenly exploded in 1968, a lavish canopy of vegetation covered the Arenal Volcano. People who climbed Arenal' s summit related that inside the crater there were big trees and at night they slept in places where there was some heat due to small steam outlets. Currently, the green area is located on the east side of the mountain, and other little green parts can be seen on the north and the south of the volcano.

Today, however, it's a different story. This tour will take you through the green areas on a hike along the base of this extraordinary “Mountain of Fire.” You'll begin hiking on the active side of the volcano, through the forest to areas where some recent lava flows destroyed the forest. The woods are now in the process of regeneration.
We offer two different hikes. You can take a 3.5 hour trail that reaches as close as 500 meters from the lava flows; or, you can take a 1.5 hour trail that will bring you about a kilometer from the volcano.
Either way, you're guaranteed a great view of the volcano and a memorable hike.

Includes: Transportation with Air Condition, bilingual-guide, entrance fee, refreshments, water and cookies.
What to bring: Comfortable shoes, binoculars, camera and film.
Duration: Approximately 3.5 hours:

MOUNTAIN BIKING TOUR
Pedal your way into exceptional scenery when views of Arenal Volcano, the dense forest and scenic Lake Arenal Dam all converge. From here, you'll take an old trail into the forest, ending up at the entrance to Arenal Volcano National Park. You'll stop at the observatory for some great photos, and then head back to the main road.

The scenery isn't limited to the volcano. On this trail you will have the chance to see many different birds, including Squirrel Cuckoos (piaya cayana), Keel Billed Toucans (ramphastos sulfuratus), Crested Guans (penelope purpurascens), Slaty Tailed Trogons (trogon massena), Black Headed Trogons (trogon melanocephalus), Bare Throated Tiger Herons (tigrisoma mexicanum), Laughing Falcons (herpetotheres cachinnans); as well as howler monkeys and raccoons.
This is a great chance to travel much more intimately through the great volcano's fascinating surroundings.

Which is lucky for you. Most of the caves are covered with limestone rocks, stalactites, stalagmites and corals, and many other whimsical stone formations. A river runs through the caves, making things even more interesting. You'll check out marine fossils, spiders, bats and crickets throughout the hour and a half tour. Because you will have to walk through the river and waterfalls from the upper part of the cave, it is recommended that you take light clothes, hiking shoes and an extra set of clothing so you can change when you finish exploring the caves.
