ABOUT THE POAS VOLCANO - courtesy of ICT Costa Rica:

The Poás (2708 m.o.s.l) is an active volcano, of sub conic shape, whose crest presents depressions limited by faults, volcanic cones and craters, product of recent geologic activity.

The crest of the massif presents three structures of recent formation: the main crater: the Poás, the Botos lagoon and the Von Frantzius cone. The main crater has recently and historically within the last two centuries, shown eruptive activity.

LOCATION:
It’s located 37 km northwest of the city of Alajuela and 10 km from the community of Poasito, on the Central Volcanic Mountain Range, in Poas county, province of Alajuela, in the Conservation Area of the Central Volcanic Mountain Range.

MAIN ATTRACTIONS:
At an altitude of 2.708 meters above sea level, Poás is an attraction of great natural richness. Its main crater is spectacular and is considered one of the greatest in the world.

You may also enjoy the Botos Lagoon, the flora and fauna of the cloud forest, hiking through natural trails and the great diversity of landscapes in the cloud and elfin forests.

Its fauna is generally scarce; nevertheless, it has an abundant avifauna. Over 70 species of birds have been identified; among them: the mountain robin, hummingbird, quetzal, black guan, rufous-collared sparrow, emerald toucanet, large-footed finch and yellow-thighed finch.
