ABOUT THE M/V Grigoriy Mikheev:  click here for a deck plan

The ‘Grigoriy Mikheev ' is a modern and comfortable research vessel of the Hydro-graphic Institute in St. Petersburg . She was built in 1990 in Finland, and was designed as an ice-strengthened vessel. She has been converted in the Netherlands for passenger use and is ideally suited for expedition cruising. The vessel is 66 metres (210 feet) long, with a breadth of 12.8 metres (42 feet), and a draft of approximately 3.5 metres (12 feet), and a displacement of 2,000 tonnes. Powered by two 1,700 horsepower diesel engines, she is capable of speeds of 14 knots. She has a good anti-roll system, a range of 70 days independent operation and is ISM certified .

The vessel is strongly built of steel with an ice-strengthened hull, perfect for the polar seas. The ‘Grigoriy Mikheev' is manned by an enthusiastic Russian crew of around 20, all highly experienced in ice navigation. Russian captains are recognised experts in polar navigation. All our international expedition leaders and lecturers are highly knowledgeable, helpful and dedicated to the protection of the environment.

The ‘Grigoriy Mikheev' provides accommodation for 46 travelers in comfortable twin and superior cabins.
All cabins are outside, with a desk, windows and ample storage space.

  • 6 Twin cabins without bath have upper and lower berths and wash basins.
Shared shower and toilet facilities are conveniently located on the same Deck 3
  • 14 Cabins with private facilities are located on Decks 3 and 4 and have upper and lower berths
  • 3 Superior cabins with private facilities located on Deck 4 have a double sofa-bed and a separate single bed.

The ‘Grigoriy Mikheev' has a large bridge and good open deck-viewing areas. She carries a full complement of Zodiac craft, excellent for landings and wildlife viewing opportunities in otherwise inaccessible areas. Excellent cuisine prepared by international chefs is served in the dining room, which also serves as the lecture room. Other public areas include a lounge and bar (open bar policy including Chilean wines, beers and spirits, plus soft drinks, tea, coffee and hot chocolate), a small library, an infirmary and a sauna.

NOTE: For 2009 season, the ship will be the M/V Professor Multanovskiy

ABOUT THE BAe 146-200: The new aircraft for the 2008-2009 season will still be operated by Aerovias DAP, a Chilean airline with over 20 years experience flying Patagonia and Antarctica.

The BAe 146 was manufactured in the United Kingdom by British Aerospace (which later became part of BAE Systems). It is a high-wing aircraft with very short runaway requirements, particularly suited for this kind of destinations.

The major advantages of incorporating this new aircraft in the "Fly & Cruise" concept are:

The reduced flying window needed to reach to Antarctica will consequently reduce over 50% the risk of delaying or cancelling the flight due to unfavorable weather conditions at the landing site. We remind you that in ANTARCTICA XXI history no air-cruise has ever been cancelled as consequence of the impossibility to fly to Antarctica, and in less than 10% of departures the delay has overcome a few hours.

30 December, 2009 - 06 January, 2010

Jumping over Cape Horn and the mythical waters of the Drake Passage, Antarctica XXI invites you to a unique experience that will take you to one of the most remote places on earth, the coldest, highest, windiest, driest, and most inhospitable continent - Antarctica. In a little over an hour and a half hours of flight from Punta Arenas to King George Island, the largest Island of the South Shetland Archipelago, you will be at the gates of the white continent. From King George Island we will navigate for six days and five nights along the Antarctic Peninsula, visiting the most wonderful places and enjoying the best wildlife sites of Antarctica. During the whole journey we will be giving different lectures to introduce and inform you about this wonderful Continent.

DAY 1:
Arrival at the city of Punta Arenas where you will be met by Antarctica XXI Staff, to be later transferred to the selected hotel. During the afternoon, before dinner, you will receive instructions in relation with the norms that should be followed in Antarctica and about the procedures of embarkation and disembarkation. Later, you will enjoy our welcome dinner at the José Nogueira Hotel, a centenary French style mansion, where you will have the chance to meet your expedition mates.

DAY 2:
Our Antarctic adventure begins. Flight from Punta Arenas to King George Island (South Shetland Islands). The flight takes a little over three hours. Upon arrival, we will be able to tour around the area where the "Presidente Eduardo Frei M." Chilean Base and "Bellingshausen" Russian Base are located. We will gather at the beach on Fildes Bay for embarkation, by Zodiac boats, to our ship.

DAY 3 to 6:
As we cruise between the South Shetland Islands and the Peninsula, sailing along ice-filled fjords and between spectacular icebergs, we will enjoy the company of sea birds, penguins, seals and whales. Our journey toward the south may include visits to some of the most magnificent spots in the white continent such as: Hannah Point, Port Lockroy, Petermann Island, Paradise Bay, Cuverville and Deception Islands amongst others. Our adventure will be full, with daily landings and cruises in Zodiac boats, selected lectures and an enjoyable time on board.

DAY 7:
Return to King George Island where we will disembark, in Zodiac boats, at Fildes Bay by "Presidente Eduardo Frei M." Chilean Base, and head to the "Teniente Marsh" aerodrome at the Chilean Base to take the flight back to Punta Arenas. End of program upon arrival at the Airport in Punta Arenas.

REMARKS:
Flights schedule and Antarctic itinerary may vary depending on weather conditions. At the end of the program, a free transfer to the city will be available at the airport for all passengers staying overnight.
